Can I use Advantage year-round?
Advantage can be used year-round and it is especially beneficial in areas of the country where fleas are a constant problem. Otherwise, it is recommended you begin using Advantage several weeks before the flea season starts generally April and continue until the flea season is over (November/December).

Why is my pet STILL scratching after using Advantage?

Pets scratch for a lot of reasons - not just fleas.

Other parasites, food allergies and internal diseases are a few reasons for scratching.

Some cats and dogs continue to be itchy long after the flea is gone - up to two weeks after just one bite.

Avoid scratching and ensure pet comfort by using Advantage early to prevent fleas.

Consider the alternative - remember, one flea can lay over 2,000 eggs in your home and live on your pet for several months.

Can Advantage be used on geriatric cats and dogs?
Yes. Simply being old would not preclude the use of Advantage on a cat or dog. As with any product, pet owners with specific concerns should consult their veterinarian prior to use.

Can Advantage be used on pets other than cats and dogs?
If you want to use Advantage on ferrets, rabbits and other exotic pets discuss this with your veterinarian.

Advantage was extensively tested on cats and dogs, and found to be well tolerated even at exaggerated doses. There have been 2 studies reported (2001 and 2002) at the North America Veterinary Conference on the safety and dosage of Advantage. However, there is no label for exotic animals in Canada. Owners of exotic species should consult their veterinarian for appropriate methods of flea control.

Will Advantage take care of all of my flea problems?
With Advantage, adult fleas are killed before they can lay eggs. Research shows when using Advantage, other environmental control products or insect growth inhibitors are not needed to control fleas. Advantage is all you need.

If my pet is pregnant can I use Advantage on her?
As with any product, if your pet is pregnant or nursing you should consult your veterinarian before using it.

I used Advantage on my pets - why are there still fleas?
There are a number of reasons that fleas may appear even after using Advantage:

Incorrect application.

Cocoons that were in the house before Advantage treatment, and have since hatched. Cocoons continue to hatch out for 6-8 weeks, and even longer (e.g. many months) if dormant. Fleas may be seen on Advantage-treated pets, but those fleas are in the process of dying.

Excessive shampooing and/or swimming. Dogs that swim more frequently than four times monthly or are bathed more than twice monthly should have their flea control monitored, and reapplied as necessary.

Fleas picked up inside or outside from other pets or animals not treated with Advantage.

I used Advantage AND sprayed my home - why am I still seeing fleas?

See above answer and remember that nothing kills flea cocoons.

Depending on the type of spray used, a spray may kill hatched adult fleas or affect the flea eggs.

Advantage kills adult fleas, but nothing kills fleas when they are in their cocoons.

Pet owners must wait for all cocoons to hatch before their house is flea free.

Pets are an effective flea magnet that will stimulate cocoons to hatch.

Once fleas hatch and jump onto Advantage-treated pets, they die before they are able to lay any eggs. This will stop reinfestation of your house. Consider using Advantage before fleas are discovered.

How often can I use Advantage?
It is recommended to use Advantage once a month preferably on the same day for the entire flea season (April through November). If your pet has a special dermal (skin) condition and requires frequent bathing, Advantage can be used as often as once a week.

Should there be a noticeable odour?
Benzyl alcohol has been reported to have an odour. The alcohol is volatile and will dry within 12 hours after application. The odour should disappear over time.

Ensure proper application, so that the entire vial of Advantage is applied directly on the skin. Avoid getting any on the pet's fur because the aromatic odour may be more noticeable and last longer if some of the Advantage is accidentally applied to the fur. If applied onto the fur it may affect shampoos and conditioners etc. which in turn may contribute to odour.
